Facelift

Facioplasty or facelift is an elective surgery that removes and tightens excess skin. This procedure creates a more youthful appearance and can eliminate that tired look that most of us get as we age.

Good Candidates

The ideal facelift candidate has some sagging in the lower region of the face and neck. There should be some elasticity apparent in the skin. Most facelift patients are between the ages of 40 and 70, however there are many people who undergo facelifts that are past this age range and have great results. The most important step in this process is to speak openly and honestly with your surgeon about your concerns and goals. Together you will decide the best plan for your individual needs.

Prior to Surgery

Before you set a date for your surgery, you will have a face to face consultation with your surgeon. At this point you will discuss what’s best to meet your needs. This is a great time to ask questions and to be informed of every detail. Your doctor will review the dos and don’ts prior to surgery like diet and medications to avoid.

The Surgery

A facelift can take between 3 and 4 hours depending on the details of the procedure. Most surgeries are done on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia. Incisions are usually made close to the hairline, in front of and behind the ear and sometimes in the hairline at the base of the head. A small incision is also usually made just under your chin. The skin is gently pulled at the lip, chin and neck. The result is a tighter, firmer, more youthful appearance. In many cases, a facelift is done in conjunction with a brow lift and /or eyelid lift.

Benefits

The benefits of a facelift are a more youthful appearance. Some patients find that they look 10 years younger. Remember that the aging process will continue, but you can enjoy the process more confidently and with a more positive outlook on life.

Recovery

Recovery time varies by patient but in most cases, you can return to work and normal activities after a week or two. The first two days you will be instructed to rest. Bruising, swelling and tenderness are common. Some numbness is common but will dissipate after the first few weeks or months. Remember that during recovery, you will look a little different, but you can be confident that once you have healed, you will look like you, only more youthful and well rested.
