Business North Carolina has just released its annual hospital report and
CaroMont Regional Medical Center not only ranks #3 in North Carolina,
but the Gastonia hospital earned the top spot in the Charlotte region.
The 435-bed hospital outranked more 15 other hospitals in the 12-county
region to claim the #1 spot.
The rankings are calculated using more than 25 metrics, including information
provided by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Business
North Carolina looks at patient-satisfaction surveys, as well as infection,
readmission and death rates for common procedures. Other factors include
safety report cards by the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit The Leapfrog
Group, distinction awards from insurer Blue Cross and Blue Shield and
national performance ratings from U.S. News & World Report. Included
in the ranking are adult, acute-care medical centers with at least 50
beds, excluding specialty and psychiatric hospitals.
“This ranking is the product of our unwavering commitment to provide
exceptional care to our patients and our community,” said Chris
Peek, President and Chief Executive Officer at CaroMont Health. “We
certainly pride ourselves on the breadth of services that we offer and
the leading-edge technology we have, but none of that matters if you don’t
have a team of people whose expertise is rivaled only by their compassion
for patients.”
This year, Business North Carolina’s annual rankings of North Carolina
hospitals show CaroMont Regional Medical Center in third place, trailing
only Durham’s Duke University Medical Center, part of the Duke Health
system, and Raleigh’s UNC Rex Hospital, which is part of the large
UNC Health system.
“Do you have to be big to be good? Absolutely not,” says Shelby
Lassiter, clinical performance improvement director of the 130-member
N.C. Healthcare Association. “CaroMont is an example. Frequently,
smaller organizations don’t have the resources larger ones do, so
they have to become masters of innovation and leaders in how to partner
with their communities.”
Business North Carolina cites that hospital rankings can skew in favor
of larger institutions, making it particularly impressive that CaroMont
Regional Medical Center continues to perform well year after year. With
more than 250,000 patient encounters annually, a focus on safety, quality
and thoughtful growth is key to CaroMont Regional Medical Center’s success.
"Business North Carolina annually uses a variety of metrics to compile
the Best Hospitals list,” said David Mildenberg, editor of Business
North Carolina magazine. “We believe it is important to provide
readers with a tool to help measure the best hospital care in the state.
We particularly appreciate the intense effort that North Carolina hospitals
have made to provide high quality care through this difficult year."
“We are accountable to this community in a very personal, tangible
way,” continued Peek. “We are part of our patients’
lives and they are part of ours. We strive to have every person who works
at CaroMont Health understand and appreciate that responsibility. When
more than 4,300 passionate individuals take action for the collective
good, change becomes momentum. Futures become brighter. And we believe
that together, we all thrive.”
