CaroMont Health Awards Nearly $200,000 in Scholarships
Last month, the CaroMont Health Foundation and the CaroMont Regional Medical
Center Auxiliary honored 64 recipients with almost $200,000 in scholarships.
These scholarships included: the Lee Bucci Professional Nursing Scholarship,
the Dr. Marty D’Amore Scholarship, the Mr. and Mrs. Joe R. Hudson
Nursing Scholarship, the H. Sprugeon Mackie, Jr. Scholarship, the Wayne
F. Shovelin Scholarship, the Lonnie and Rachel Waggoner Nursing Education
Scholarship, the Team CaroMont Scholarship and the Gertrude Clinton Health
Career Scholarship. The CaroMont Health Foundation awarded $128,500 to
47 scholarship recipients and the CaroMont Regional Medical Center Auxiliary,
made up of adult and teenage volunteers, awarded 43 scholarships worth $65,000.
Lee Bucci Professional Nursing Scholarship
The Bucci Scholarship Fund was established in 2012 in honor of Lee Bucci,
former Director of Gaston Hospice. This scholarship is awarded to a student
seeking an accredited degree in the field of nursing (LPN, RN, or BSN),
with special consideration given to the field of palliative care.
Charlene Guffey is this year’s recipient of the Lee Bucci Professional
Nursing Scholarship.
Dr. Marty D’Amore Scholarship
The Dr. Marty D’Amore Scholarship Fund was established in 2015 following
the death of Dr. D’Amore after a long battle with ALS (Amyotrophic
Lateral Sclerosis). The fund was created and supported by donations from
physicians and the medical community. Awards from this scholarship are
given to students accepted or enrolled in an accredited Radiology Sciences program.
Amber Benfield is this year’s recipient of the Dr. Marty D’Amore
Scholarship.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe R. Hudson Nursing Scholarship
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hudson established the Hudson Scholarship in 1974, to
support students and help staff the new Gaston Memorial Hospital. Awards
from this scholarship loan program are given based on organizational needs,
scholastics and acceptance into nursing professions for area students.
Recipients have to sign a promissory note that they intend to become or
remain an employee of CaroMont Health after completing their studies.
Recipients of the Joe R. Hudson Nursing Scholarship are: Shannon Branch,
Janice Hill, Brandi Stewart Lee and Holly Williams.
The H. Spurgeon Mackie, Jr. Scholarship
The Mackie Scholarship was established in 2006 in honor of H. Spurgeon
Mackie, Jr., a long-standing Board Member and friend of CaroMont Health,
upon his retirement from Wachovia Bank. Awards from this scholarship program
are given to students majoring or continuing their education in nursing
and/or allied health professions.
Recipients of the H. Spurgeon Mackie, Jr. Scholarship are: Cheryl Aldridge,
Sarah Bolynn, Ashley Brooks, Makayla Hayes, Marlena Heracklis, Amanda
Johnson, Addison McElveen, Carissa McGinnis, Magan McMillan, Victoria
Price, Jake Quinn and Detra Rice.
The Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship
The Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship was established in 2009 by the Duke Kimbrell
family in honor of Wayne Shovelin’s many contributions to CaroMont
Health, including his 23 years as President and CEO. Awards from this
fund are given to a high school senior who has excelled academically,
demonstrated strong leadership and community involvement and plans to
major in a health-related field.
Recipients of the Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship are: Maren East, Linnea
Jurs and Bailey Thomasson.
The Lonnie and Rachel Waggoner Nursing Education Scholarship
The Lonnie and Rachel Waggoner Nursing Education Scholarship is a permanent
endowment established in 2005. Awards from this scholarship are given
to students seeking an accredited degree in the field of nursing (LPN,
RN or BSN).
Recipients of the Lonnie and Rachel Waggoner Nursing Education Scholarship
are: Janasia Armstrong, Lauren Biggers, Catherine Bynum and Kelli Ferguson.
Team CaroMont Scholarship
The Team CaroMont Scholarship was established in 2015 and funded by employee
contributions to the Team CaroMont campaign. All applicants must be employees
of CaroMont Health or one of its subsidiaries, and scholarship funds may
be used for degree and select non-degree programs.
Recipients of the Team CaroMont Scholarship are: Lee Beard, Amber Benfield,
Char Biamonte, Amanda Broome, Aimee Callahan, Carmen Cloninger, Amy Cody,
Marzette Colon, Tammy Cozad, Glenda Crowell, Sandra Denison, Charlene

The Gertrude Clinton Health
Career Scholarship Fund
The scholarship was established by the Gaston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary
in 1971. Following Mrs. Gertrude Clinton’s death, the fund was changed
to a scholarship in her memory. Mrs. Clinton served as Gaston County Social
Services Director, Personnel Director for CaroMont Health, and was a founding
member and President of the Gaston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
