Walk With a Doc to Improve Your Health

Walking Program Takes Steps to Improve Health

Lace up your sneakers and join CaroMont Health one Saturday each month for Walk with a Doc, a free walking program open to anyone interested in improving their health. Each walk is led by a CaroMont Heart physician offering participants a chance to walk and talk with a doc, get healthy lifestyle tips, have your blood pressure checked and enjoy healthy snacks. The next walk is July 18, 2015 at 9 a.m. at the Eastridge Mall food court, 246 North New Hope Road, in Gastonia.

“Cardiovascular disease and other health risks have been linked to a lack of physical activity,” said Mark Heckel, MD, Cardiologist at CaroMont Heart. “Exercise a great way to improve your health, and everyone can benefit from walking. Our program is an enjoyable way to take the first step toward better health. We’re excited to help members of our community get moving.”

From lowering blood pressure to enhancing overall mood, there are numerous health benefits to adding steps in your day. According to the American Heart Association, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Walking for as little as 30 minutes a day can have the following health benefits:

  • Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease
  • Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  • Maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity
  • Enhance mental well-being
  • Improve blood lipid profile
  • Reduce the risk of osteoporosis
  • Reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer
  • Reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes

CaroMont’s walking program was created in June 2012 and is modeled after the original WWAD program founded by David Sabgir, a board-certified cardiologist who practices with Mount Carmel Clinical Cardiovascular Specialists—at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s.
