Blepharoplasty – Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery is a process that removes fat and skin from the upper and
lower eyelids. It can correct drooping eyes and/or bags under the eyes
that make you look older and more tired than you are. Blepharoplasty will
not remove crow’s feet or dark circles. This procedure can be done
in addition to a brow lift or in conjunction with a facelift.
Best Candidates
The best candidates for this are relatively healthy and who have realistic
expectations. Most patients are at least 35 years old. Sometimes, because
of heredity, younger patients will decide to have this surgery. There
are some contraindications for this surgery like glaucoma, a detached
retina, etc. Your doctor will review these with you carefully before surgery
is planned.
The Surgery
This procedure takes one hour depending on the extent of the surgery. A
small incision is made along the crease of the upper eyelid. If the lower
eyelid is being treated, the surgeon may be able to go in through the
inside of the lower lid and a scar will not be visible. This is an outpatient
surgery and general anesthesia is usually used.
Benefits
Eyes will seem bigger and more open. You will look more rested and have
a more youthful appearance for years to come.
After the Surgery
Most patients will have some swelling and bruising. Vision may be blurred
but only very temporarily. Slight burning and itching are common. Your
doctor may lubricate the eye area and apply a bandage. You will be instructed
to keep your head elevated for a few days and to use cold compresses to
help with swelling.
Your doctor will give you detailed instruction before and after your surgery.
Recovery time depends on the patient. It usually takes a few months for
the swelling and bruising to heal completely.
