Pulmonary Embolectomy

Patients can have blood clots from their legs suddenly break loose and lodge in the pulmonary artery. This blocks blood flow into the lungs and can be life threatening. In this procedure, done on the heart lung machine with the heart beating, a small incision is made in the pulmonary artery. The blood clot, usually several inches in length, is removed.
