Hybrid Procedures
Cardiologists and cardiac surgeons team up and collaborate in this procedure to provide the best possible outcome and provide “one-stop” shopping. Procedures performed by cardiologists are combined with procedures done by heart surgeons to create a “hybrid” procedure. For example, certain types of blockages are best stinted while others are best bypassed. A patient might therefore undergo a stent on one vessel and a bypass on another. This utilizes the best procedures from each field of medicine. Another example would be to stent a blocked heart vessel (avoiding the need for bypass surgery) and perform a minimally invasive valve operation (which can not be done if a bypass is needed) during the same hospitalization.
