Inpatient Oncology Unit/Outpatient Infusion Center
Gaston Memorial Hospital’s Inpatient Medical Oncology Nursing Unit on the third floor is dedicated to meeting the special needs of cancer patients. The hospital staff works to build a unit where the patient who must be in the hospital can find a comforting environment that encourages them to focus on healing. The nursing staff is comprised of numerous Registered Nurses that have been specifically trained through the Oncology Nursing Society to administer chemotherapy and manage the care of the patients receiving cancer therapies. There are also nursing staff who have achieved national nursing certification in Oncology (OCN) through the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation.
3 South Family Room
Located on 3South, the family room provides a comfortable place for families to visit. A television, DVD player, magazines and cancer education materials are all available for families and patients to use any time. Refreshments are also available to families during their visit.
End of Life Care
To help ease a patient’s final days, 3South nursing staff has received extensive training on end of life care. 3South Registered Nurses attend the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC). The ELNEC core curriculum was developed to provide end-of-life education for practicing nurses focusing on pain and symptom management and communication, as well as grief, loss and bereavement.
