7 Things You Don’t Know about CaroMont Health

Think about your neighbors. You know what car they drive. You notice how frequently (or infrequently!) they cut their grass. You exchange friendly waves now and then. But unless you’ve spent time getting to know your neighbors, you’re missing the full picture.

And while CaroMont Health has been a neighbor to the Gaston area community for seventy years, chances are you might not know much about us, either. Perhaps you’ve only encountered us in a crisis, like a trip to the ER. Or maybe you’ve had a long relationship with one of our primary care doctors—but you had no clue that our system’s capabilities extend far beyond sniffles and sore throats. So as we celebrate our 70th anniversary, we’d like to share seven things you might not know about CaroMont Health—your neighbor.

  1. We were founded by citizens, not a corporation.

In 1946, when City Hospital was overflowing with WWII veterans, a group of concerned Gaston Couny citizens came together to make a change. They believed our community needed a high-quality, well-equipped hospital so they pledged a day’s wages to purchase the hospital, setting CaroMont Health on the path to independence. Since then, we’ve remained an independent health system, which means that the needs of our neighbors andthis community guide our every decision.

  1. Our hospital has the largest single-room maternity care unit in the nation.

We opened the doors to our beautiful Birthplace in 2004. Since then, thousands of babies have been born and new families begun—all in our spacious, private suites which allow most women to labor and deliver in the same room without transferring. It has been called one of the region’s most remarkable birth centers, and it’s backed by our family-centered philosophy, the latest birthing technology, supportive family education and a level III NICU.

  1. We built an innovative Emergency Department in response to community need.

For several years, CaroMont Regional Medical Center has been one of the busiest EDs in the state. In 2015, we opened a new, additional free-standing emergency department in Mount Holly to address our region’s growing need for emergency services. This modern, spacious facility also pioneered a new “rapid evaluation” model of care designed to minimize wait times and make our patients more comfortable. It’s one example of our commitment to constant innovation.

  1. We are the only health system in the area to offer True Beam cancer therapy.

CaroMont Cancer Center has received numerous awards over the years, including being listed in the nation’s top 2% of cancer programs, but our emphasis on technology and advanced treatments sets us apart. As the only health system in the region with True Beam technology, we are able to offer our cancer patients progressive, minimally-invasive radiation therapy that helps decrease the amount and length of cancer treatments.

  1. We have more than 450 medical staff to serve you.

Whether life hands you high blood pressure or a heart attack, a bum knee or a new baby, our health system is staffed with a range of advanced, dedicated healthcare providers across a range of services and expertise. With the hospital as a hub and 43 primary care and specialty practices conveniently located across the area, we’re equipped to deliver the healthcare you need, when and where you need it.

  1. We are only one of two hospitals in NC to receive two Magnet designations.

This recognition, along with our other awards, is a result of hard work, commitment and a passion for helping others from our entire staff. We have earned many awards and accreditations over the years, but this one feels especially important to us.

  1. We were the first in the region with ABUS screening technology.

Did you know that 40 percent of women over 40 have dense breast tissue? This kind of tissue may make it harder for typical mammograms to detect cancer or other abnormalities. The Automated Breast Ultrasound, or ABUS, is designed to screen all kinds of tissue so every woman has a chance at early detection. Because we are passionate about preventive healthcare and regular screenings, CaroMont Health was the first health system in our area to provide this technology.

We are proud to celebrate seventy years of care for our community and want to thank you for sharing the journey with us. Visit to learn more.
