CaroMont Regional Medical Center Becomes First Purple Heart Hospital In The Nation

Last evening, CaroMont Regional Medical Center held a special ceremony to proclaim the organization a “Purple Heart Hospital” making it the first hospital in the nation to receive the honor. The “Purple Heart” title is part of nationwide effort spearheaded by the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) to recognize organizations desiring to convey their support for veterans.

“It is such an enormous privilege to issue this proclamation to the MOPH Chapter 634 to honor their sacrifice and to signify to our community that CaroMont Health welcomes our veterans with open arms,” said Doug Luckett, Interim CEO. “The outpouring from guests and our Veteran community made this event one of the most memorable days in my career at CaroMont Health.”

Commander Michael Stubbs received the proclamation on behalf of MOPH Chapter 634 and in return, presented a plaque to Mr. Luckett formally recognizing the designation. More than ten Purple Heart recipients, representing the more than 100 members of the MOPH Chapter 634, also attended the ceremony.

Established in 1782 by George Washington, the Purple Heart is the United States military’s oldest decoration and is given to those who have been wounded or killed while serving in combat. The Purple Heart symbol will be on permanent display at the hospital to honor of service men and women throughout all generations.

This designation is yet another way CaroMont Health shows support for the service men and women who take up arms in defense of the country. Other ventures include the naming of the hospital campus with CaroMont Regional Medical Center Medical Park, the renaming of campus street signs with Veterans Lane and CaroMont Regional Medical Center, and erecting an eternal flame monument that will permanently display hospital history and recognize all branches of military.

The historical event concluded with loud applause affirming guests’ approval of the proclamation. And to that end, the motion was made to cut the cake!
