At 18½ inches long and weighing in at 5 pounds, 13 ounces, infant
Zyqavian Stokes is already delighting his mother with excitement and great surprise.
He’s making history as the first baby born in Gaston County in 2013.
Stokes was born at 12:14 p.m. Jan. 1 at CaroMont Regional Medical Center.
Proud mother Ebony Moore of Kings Mountain said Stokes is her second child.
She was in labor for seven hours but didn’t experience any complications
“He’s very healthy,” she said. “He was a new year’s

Moore said she’s dating the baby’s father, Jared Stokes. This
is their first child together.
She arrived at CaroMont Regional Medical Center early Tuesday. When nurses
told her that her son was the first child born in Gaston County this year,
she was very surprised because he wasn’t born until after noon.
“Everybody’s excited and they’re surprised that it’s
a new year’s baby,” Moore said. “He was everybody in
the family’s new year’s surprise. We were looking forward
to seeing him in 17 days.”
She said staff members at the hospital have been helpful and she plans
on being a full-time mom. Her other son, Xzyvion Gladden, is 2 years old.
Being born on New Year’s Day is special. Moore, 24, said it’s
something she’ll be able to share with her baby as he grows up.
“Everybody’s happy and he looks just like his father,”
she said. On Tuesday afternoon, she held her new son in a hospital room
with family members nearby. “He’s here with me. He’s
a happy baby. He likes to stick his tongue out.”
Moore grew up in Gastonia and graduated from Ashbrook High School in 2007.
