And the "Gold Apple Award" Goes to CaroMont Health

06-18-2012

CaroMont Health received a ‘Gold Apple’ for nutrition last week. This gold award is the top level of recognition an organization can obtain for having met the highest bar for wellness excellence in the workplace by NC Prevention Partners. Hospitals who received this award were measured by very stringent Nutrition Standards within WorkHealthy America.

On June 6, over 300 health and community leaders from around the nation, including the CaroMont Health Wellness Team, came together at the 14th Annual Meeting for NC Prevention Partners, a statewide nonprofit and leader in reducing preventable illness and early death caused by tobacco use, poor nutrition and physical inactivity. The Annual Meeting celebrates the accomplishments NC Prevention Partners has made in the preceding year, recognizes outstanding board members, and presents awards to hospitals, schools and businesses that have shown a strong commitment to wellness.

“This past year we focused on providing great tasting food that is healthy or what we like to call ‘Stealth Health,’”, said Tim McGlothin, Director of Food Services at CaroMont Health. “If you tell them it’s healthy, half of the people won’t even try it.”

Some of the cafeteria’s menu modifications included more low-fat salad dressing offerings at the salad bar, cheese that is lower in fat, a 90-10% beef burger at the grill and healthier sautés. The cafeteria also started providing fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables throughout the year.

“We want to provide easy, healthier choices for our customer,” said McGlothin. “Signals” our point of sale signage, helps us provide an educational tool that makes it easy for the customer to choose a healthy choice. Many times at lunch I over-hear customers say they need to stay in the “GREEN” today, meaning they need to eat healthy.”

NC Prevention Partners president and CEO Dr. Meg Molloy states, “It is exciting to see the private and public sectors commit to building wellness environments, and that we are looking at innovative ways to build healthy behaviors, healthy people and healthy communities.”
