1908 | Gastonia's First Hospital
Nine-bed City Hospital is established in Gastonia. In just four years, the hospital is relocated to Main Avenue and expanded to meet the needs of a developing community.
1924 | A Growing Need
The hospital again relocates and is redesigned to accommodate 46 beds and an expanding population.
1946 | Exceptional Care With Purpose
Through public support, City Hospital is purchased and renamed Gaston Memorial Hospital.
1950 | A Legacy of Compassion
Gaston Memorial Hospital continues to grow, developing new services to better meet the needs of the region, including the addition of a school of nursing.
1973 | An Opportunity to Care
Gaston Memorial Hospital’s school of nursing graduated just three nurses in the very first class. By the time the program ended in 1973, 307 nurses received their education and training through the program.
1973 | Solid Foundations
Understanding the growth potential of Gaston County and surrounding areas, Gaston Memorial Hospital was relocated to its current site in 1973. On land leased from the county, the new state-of-the-art facility focused on providing modern technology and exceptional care to every patient.
1993 | Specialized Medicine, Close to Home
In 1993, Gaston Memorial Hospital became one of only seven hospitals in North Carolina to earn a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program designation from the American College of Surgeons.
2000 | Naming the Future
Gaston Memorial Hospital adopted the corporate name CaroMont Health to reflect both the geographical diversity of the hospital’s regional seat and the health system’s evolution into an industry leader.
2004 | New Additions
CaroMont Regional Medical Center’s West Expansion opened in 2004, introducing The Birthplace for the region’s smallest patients. At the time, the spacious facility housed the largest single-room maternity care unit in the nation. With an emphasis on family-centered services, the new expansion includes 52 “LDR” rooms, meaning labor, delivery and recovery all happen in the same place, making mom and her family more comfortable during their stay. The Level III neonatal care unit (NICU) also opened, offering advanced care for high-risk infants.
2015 | Help in a Heartbeat
With a goal to make emergency care services more accessible to residents in eastern Gaston, southern Lincoln and western Mecklenburg counties, CaroMont Health opened a free-standing emergency department in 2015. Located in the rapidly expanding community of Mount Holly, the 38,000-square-foot facility offered convenient care to approximately 12,000 patients in its first year.
2016 | Meeting the Need
The Emergency Department renovation in 2016 added an additional 10,000 square feet to the existing department, as well as 20,000 square feet of administrative space. Recognizing a need for specialized emergency care for the region’s children, the Albert G. Myers, Jr. Pediatric Care Center provides a safe, child-friendly environment for pediatric patients and their families.
